Most people outside of rock's inner circles wouldn't recognize his name, but every note on Van Halen's greatest records carries is because of him.

Donn Landee, the engineer and co-producer behind Van Halen's first eight studio albums, has died of natural causes at the age of 79, per Van Halen News Desk. The outlet shared the news on Sunday, April 5.

Landee's career began working on records like the Doors' Waiting for the Sun before joining Warner Bros. as a staff engineer in 1971. It was there that he formed what would become one of rock's most fruitful partnerships—teaming up with producer Ted Templeman on a string of landmark albums by the Doobie Brothers, Little Feat, and Van Morrison, among others. The two also collaborated on the first two albums by Montrose, a California hard rock outfit fronted by a then-unknown Sammy Hagar.

Van Halen cited Montrose as a direct influence on their choice of Templeman and Landee for their explosive 1978 self-titled debut—a record that announced the band to the world and sounded like nothing else on the radio at the time. Landee went on to engineer the band's first eight albums, and his contributions extended well beyond the recording console. He played a key role in helping guitarist Eddie Van Halen construct his legendary 5150 home studio, reportedly even helping the band convince city officials the project was a racquetball court rather than a professional recording facility.

When David Lee Roth departed and Hagar stepped in, Landee was elevated to co-producer on 1986's 5150 and 1988's OU812. Though OU812 marked his final studio collaboration with the band, he remained connected, helping remaster Van Halen albums for reissue campaigns and expanded box set editions.
