We all know about Elizabeth Bennet. You’re also likely familiar with her beloved older sister Jane, who marries Mr. Bingley. Of course, there's the wild sister, Lydia, and her closest sibling, Kitty. And that would leave the fifth sister. The middle child: Mary. But not she's not all that contrary, at least not in the telling of Janice Hadlow's The Other Bennet Sister.
Set in the world of Jane Austen'sPride and Prejudice, the 2020 bestselling novel is being adapted for television by BritBox, the streaming service dedicated to British programming. Here's what we know so far.
The full trailer goes beyond the world of Pride and Prejudice.

At just under two minutes, a new full-length trailer gives North American viewers their best look yet at all of the new characters and scenes from Hadlow’s book. (The series has already been fully released in the UK as of the end of March.) This includes Mary’s sojourn to London, away from her sisters and the rest of the immediate Bennet family, and the introduction of two important people in her life: Mr. Hayward (Dónal Finn) and Mr. Ryder (Laurie Davidson).
BritBox also released new poster art for the series this week, depicting the five Bennet sisters in front of the family home of Longbourn, with Mary front and center in her very familiar and important spectacles.

After many months of waiting, we now have a teaser trailer. Interspersed with scenes of the Bennet family as well as a few new faces, the 30-second long video is narrated by Ella Bruccoleri as Mary Bennet. “If you’re not the beautiful one, the quick-witted one, or the one full of youthful energy, then who are you?” Mary asks. Evidently full of self-deprecating humor, there’s more that meets the eye with this middle sister.
The first footage re-introduced the Bennet family.
In December, Britbox shared a present of sorts for the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birthday on December 16. The 52-second clip was the first footage of the series that had been publicly shared at the time. While all the characters at the dining table are familiar to anyone who has seen or read Pride and Prejudice, the scene itself is a lift directly from the novel The Other Bennet Sister. So some of the characterizations might seem a bit different given this book is from Mary’s point of view, not Lizzie’s.
First stills from the show were revealed in December.

Several new photos gave us our first glimpses at all of the Bennet sisters in costume. Viewers also got a peek at a few familiar characters from Pride and Prejudice, such as Caroline Bingley (Tanya Reynolds).

Set over 10 episodes, the show notes say the series will follow Mary “as she steps out of her sisters’ shadows in search of her own identity and purpose – finding herself in the middle of an epic love story along the way. Her journey will see her leave her family home in Meryton for the soirees of Regency London and the peaks and vales of the Lake District, all in search of independence, self-love and reinvention.”

The show should also have a consistent vision. Nine out of the 10 half-hour episodes will be penned by the same writer, Sarah Quintrell (Call the Midwife, Doctor Who, His Dark Materials), with Maddie Dai (We Were Dangerous) writing one episode.
The full cast has been announced.
Bridgerton fans can expect a familiar face as Bruccoleri, who portrayed Miss Barragan, a debutante on the Netflix series in season three, takes on the role of one of Jane Austen’s most unassuming characters and, apologies to Mary, forgotten characters. But as the show notes describe, “While we dream of being Lizzy, in reality most of us are more like Mary,” so we can only imagine the kind of light that Bruccoleri will bring to the role.

Veteran actor Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Downton Abbey) steps into the role of the beloved Bennet family patriarch, while Ruth Jones (Gavin & Stacey) will fill the shoes of the slightly eccentric matriarch. Maddie Close (Sunflower Child), Poppy Gilbert (My Oxford Year), Grace Hogg-Robinson (An American in Austen), and Molly Wright (The A Word) will play the sisters Bennet: Jane, Lizzie, Lydia, and Kitty, respectively.

Also notable Pride & Prejudice characters who appear in this book include Anna Fenton-Garvey (The Nevers) as Charlotte Lucas and Ryan Sampson (Doctor Who) as Mr. Collins, and Indira Varma (The Night Manager) and Richard Coyle (The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) as Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner.

The series will introduce a few new characters, of course, including Varada Sethu (Andor) as Ann Baxter and Aaron Gill (Smothered) as John Sparrow.
The show will premiere this spring.

In March, BritBox announced that The Other Bennet Sister will premiere in the U.S. and Canada on Wednesday, May 6. The series will stream on BritBox in North America, and on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the U.K.
The series filmed in Wales and England over the summer and fall. Prince William even paid a visit to the set at Bad Wolf studios in Cardiff in October.
