When *The Hunting Wives* series creator Rebecca Cutter sat down to chart season 2, she thought a lot about all the memes and TikToks that erupted from last year’s debut season. “Like *a lot*,” Cutter admits to **.

They are hard to avoid. The showrunner set out to make what she calls “a Texas noir with a lot of sex and a lot of humor,” based on May Cobb’s 2021 psychological thriller. But the characters — Margo (Malin Akerman), Sophie (Brittany Snow), Callie (Jaime Ray Newman), and all their fellow gun-toting, lesbian-loving, martini-swigging, wig-wearing women with Southern twangs — became instant internet sensations through the specific tone the series struck.

“Brittany Snow and I both had the same reaction to the reaction of season 1,” Cutter recalls. “I was like, ‘Oh! We were making camp. No one told us.’ So we kind of were the last to know, but not in a bad way. In retrospect, I’m like, ‘Oh yeah! Obviously.’”

Now going into season 2, premiering all at once on Netflix this Thanksgiving (Nov. 26), she wants to give the people more of what they want. “You can’t help but think of, *What are the Twitter moments? What are the memes?*” she continues. “I hate to use the word ‘data’ because that sounds like I’m actually researching. No, my research is looking at Instagram and TikTok. So you’re trying to outdo that, but at the same time, you don’t want it to become a parody of itself. So I have to be careful not to be doing things *just* for the memes.”

Cutter believes you can’t force camp. All she can do is make the show she set out to make. But she can at least promise one thing: “A lot of s--- happens. That’s my jam. I do not like a boring show. I want s--- to happen.”

The story behind *The Hunting Wives* season 2 now moves on from the source material, having tapped all the key beats from Cobb’s book the first time. But season 1’s cliffhangers and revelations provided new inspiration. The aftermath of Sophie’s vehicular incident with Kyle (Michael Aaron Milligan), who’s still lying at the body of a lake, offered a lot of plot.

Sophie remains socially isolated as she tries to repair her relationship with Graham (Evan Jonigkeit). But this is Sophie we’re talking about, so there’s a great deal of mental and emotional unraveling, caused by all the anxiety that comes with killing the love of her life’s brother.

“She has not seen Margot since the end of season 2,” Cutter confirms, “and that does not mean she’s not thinking about her.” The showrunner promises viewers won’t have to wait long before she and Margo are in the same room together again. “But it is still a slow build,” she clarifies. “We were very careful to give people what they want, but not too much of it too soon.”

As for Margo herself, she must reckon with the now-contentious relationship with her husband, Jed (Dermot Mulroney), as his campaign for political office ramps up. “As far as the other Hunting Wives go, she’s still the queen bee,” Cutter says. “Margot is still in charge, but she’s managing more in terms of the facade versus the real.”

Season 1 revealed Margo as Abby’s killer, and now both she and Sophie are determined to keep their respective crimes covered up — all of which provides a ticking clock for the new episodes. “While there is a new dead body, that is not the driving force of it,” Cutter teases of season 2. “It is much more: When are these things going to come out? It’s less about the whodunnit and more about: How are our characters dealing with these past crimes?”

Contributing to all the new “s---” that’s happening is a handful of fresh faces.

Kim Matula plays Nadia Kelly; “Callie gets to have her own stardom, and a lot of that has to do with her relationship with Nadia,” Cutter prefaces. John Stamos plays Chase Brylan; Cutter credits Netflix with the suggestion to cast the *Full House* alum for this role. Alex FitzAlan then plays Lincoln Trout; Cutter originally wrote this political consultant based off a real person — “I’m not gonna say who it was,” she says — but FitzAlan’s audition inspired her to take a new direction.

Of course, the true star of *The Hunting Wives* — and most of the memes — remains Akerman’s wig. Cutter confirms their wig budget was bigger for season 2, following the immense reaction. “I don’t even think it was a discussion,” she says. “It was just very clear that we were getting new wigs. Like, no expenses spared, just get us some new wigs.”

She adds, “There’s some wig glow-ups you’ll notice, two in particular,” but “Margo’s old wig makes a few cameos.”

“There is a flashback with an old wig, so I’m not sure it’s super obvious,” Cutter shares, “but I made sure to have a wig continuity.” Like she says, it’s giving the people what they want.
