Stefon Diggs prevented Commanders' game-tying try with nonsensical TD celebration penalty

There's never a good time for any player to pick up a celebration penalty, but the timing doesn't get much worse than what Stefon Diggs went with on Sunday.
Diggs was making his Commanders debut in Washington's Week 1 matchup with the Eagles, and the four-time Pro Bowl receiver found the end zone with about 10 minutes to play. Yet, even Diggs' great play came with a huge mistake.
While the NFL has softened its celebration rules in recent years, celebrations involving the goal posts are banned. Players can't dunk over the uprights. They can't jump on the padding. It's the easiest 15-yard penalty, and the players know that. But Diggs seemingly forgot that in the excitement of his first Commanders touchdown.

The touchdown brought the Commanders within two points, which would have been an automatic two-point conversion try given the spot in the game. But with the Commanders moved back due to the penalty, they had to settle for a long PAT instead.
It was the kind of penalty that changed the very trajectory of the game. The Commanders went from potentially tying the game to still chasing an Eagles lead.
