The movie is exploding on Netflix right now, and it brings together several familiar faces from Taylor Sheridan’s biggest projects.

Taylor Sheridan’s Those Who Wish Me Dead has been around for five years, but Netflix viewers are suddenly giving the R-rated thriller plenty of attention.

At the time of writing, the Angelina Jolie-led film is No. 5 on Netflix’s Top 10 Global Movies list.

The film stars Jolie as Hannah Faber, a smokejumper haunted by a past tragedy who becomes responsible for protecting a young boy after his father is murdered. With assassins closing in and a massive wildfire spreading through the Montana wilderness, Hannah and Connor have to survive both threats at once.

It’s exactly the kind of gritty, high-stakes story that has become associated with Sheridan’s name. (Hence its popularity).

Critics Were Divided on Those Who Wish Me Dead

Those Who Wish Me Dead currently holds a 63% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on more than 200 reviews. Its audience score is considerably higher at 86%, which is in-line with audience reception across Sheridan’s projects.

Roger Ebert’s website was less enthusiastic, giving the film two out of four stars. Critic Sheila O’Malley praised the movie’s action sequences, particularly the depiction of the rapidly spreading wildfire, but argued that the film’s multiple storylines kept it from developing a stronger emotional center.

Jon Bernthal and Taylor Sheridan Have Worked Together Before

Jon Bernthal’s appearance in Those Who Wish Me Dead was not his first collaboration with Sheridan.

The two previously worked together on Sicario, the 2015 crime thriller written by Sheridan. Bernthal played Ted, a corrupt banker whose connection to the drug trade briefly brings him into the film’s brutal world. Sicario was widely acclaimed, earning a 92% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and establishing Sheridan as a major screenwriter in the crime-thriller genre.

Bernthal and Sheridan reunited again for Wind River, Sheridan’s 2017 directorial debut. Bernthal played Matt Rayburn in the murder mystery, which follows a wildlife tracker and an FBI agent investigating the death of a young Indigenous woman on the Wind River Reservation. The film earned an 87% critics score and a 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Those movies helped establish the connection between Sheridan and Bernthal long before Yellowstone, Mayor of Kingstown, and Sheridan’s growing television empire.

Bernthal isn’t the only familiar face in the hit Sheridan movie, either.

Finn Little, who plays Connor, went on to become better known to Sheridan fans as Carter on Yellowstone and Dutton Ranch. Little joined the Western drama around the same period that Those Who Wish Me Dead was filmed.

The movie also features Aiden Gillan, who plays Milo Sunter in one of Sheridan’s most popular shows, Mayor of Kingstown and James Jordan, who is pretty much a Sheridan Easter Egg at this point (with his role as Dale in Landman standing out as a fan-favorite highlight).

Angelina Jolie, meanwhile, gives the movie its biggest star presence. Her return to an action-heavy role was one of the film’s major selling points, and she carries much of the movie’s survival story alongside Little.
