A source said Prince William doubted that Prince Harry’s UK return would avoid reigniting family tensions. The royal siblings’ relationship has fractured since Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down from their royal responsibilities and moved to the US in 2020. The rift solidified after the Sussexes made shocking revelations against the royal family in Harry’s memoir and the couple’s documentary.

A source told Us Weekly about Prince William’s stance on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s return to the UK. They said, “There was cautious optimism that perhaps they would arrive in silent dignity and not stir up drama, but William was much less optimistic than the king and was proven right because right now he’s having an ‘I told you so’ moment.”

Currently, the Sussexes and Buckingham Palace are at odds over a recently released letter that clarified the former’s working status. The letter read, “Their styles as His and Her Royal Highness remain in abeyance and are not used. The charitable work of the Duke and Duchess is a personal matter for them both and undertaken in their private capacity. In short, their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.”

The couple reportedly took issue with the word “private,” as they preferred the term “public figures.” Moreover, they also wanted the palace to acknowledge their association with the royal family on a personal level. A former butler, Grant Harrold, claimed that the Sussexes have no plans to back down from their clash with the palace. This could further escalate tensions between the king and his younger son, whose bond was reportedly showing signs of improvement.

In addition, the rift between William and Harry could also deepen in the wake of the latter’s rumored Diana movie. “There is a difference between telling Diana’s story and using Diana’s story to validate your own or elevate yourself. That is why I think watching his brother commercialize their mother almost 30 years after her death could feel vulgar to Prince William and might feel like another betrayal,” Kinsey Schofield added.
