The 13-year-old prince was accompanied by his parents, Kate Middleton and Prince William, for his first day at the prestigious all-boys boarding school

While he arrived in “home clothes,” Prince George was later photographed in Eton’s famous uniform, complete with a tailcoat

Prince George is officially an Etonian.

The 13-year-old prince arrived for his first day at Eton College on Tuesday, Sept. 8, accompanied by his parents, Prince William and Kate Middleton.

The family was greeted in a schoolyard by Simon Henderson, the headmaster of the school, and Sir Nicholas Coleridge, the provost of Eton, who serves as the chair of the governing body.

While Prince George wore “home clothes” for the official greeting, new photos were released shortly after his arrival showing the royal sporting Eton’s distinct uniform. Matt Porteous, a photographer who regularly gets behind the camera for official images of the Prince and Princess of Wales’ family, snapped the three images of George posing in his uniform for the first time.

Like his father before him, George will adhere to the dress code during his time at the prestigious all-boys boarding school: a black tailcoat, waistcoat, pin-striped trousers and a stiff white collar.

George’s uncle Prince Harry, who attended Eton starting in 1998, recalled the complexities of the school’s uniform in his 2023 memoir.

“I didn’t even know how to get dressed in the morning,” Harry wrote in Spare. “Every Etonian was required to wear a black tailcoat, white collarless shirt, white stiff collar pinned to the shirt with a stud — plus pinstripe trousers, heavy black shoes and a tie that wasn’t a tie, more like a cloth strip folded into the white detachable collar.”

The Duke of Sussex, who will celebrate his 42nd birthday next week, said it “took forever” to get dressed on his first morning at the school.

If Prince George becomes a “Pop,” a senior student at Eton with a leadership role, he will be allowed to wear a more flashy waistcoat as part of his uniform. Prince William famously sported a Union Jack-themed waistcoat as a “Pop.”

The Prince and Princess of Wales’ arrival with Prince George echoed William’s own first day at Eton in September 1995, when the then-13-year-old prince was accompanied by both Princess Diana and then-Prince Charles. Despite separating three years earlier, William’s parents came together for the milestone, with Prince Harry, then 10, also joining his older brother for the occasion.

Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, 8, did not join their parents in seeing Prince George off on his first day at Eton.

After their introduction, William, Kate and George were directed into the fourth-form passage. Like other first-year students, known as “F Block” at Eton, George’s parents will help him settle into his new room.

Prince George wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps by attending Eton, where Prince William attended from 1995 until 2000. His years there included the time after his mother Princess Diana’s death in 1997.

“Eton was a much-needed haven for William,” royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith previously told PEOPLE. “It will give George a rigorous education that he will need for his role.”

The Prince of Wales will likely have given his eldest son a heads-up on the uniform and some pointers on school-specific lingo.

William may have even shared some hints for the “colours test,” where Prince George will be quizzed on the official colors of Eton College’s 25 boarding houses as well as the school’s building locations.

While George will board with his schoolmates during the week, he will be able to return home on designated weekends, and parents are encouraged to attend sporting events, performances and other school activities. And he’ll be close to home; Eton is just 15 miles from the Wales family’s residence at Forest Lodge.

William remembered the school’s proximity to Windsor fondly during his candid appearance on The Reluctant Traveler With Eugene Levy last year. He recalled having “the best teas” with his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, when he was able to get away from his studies for a quick visit to the castle.
