Kevin Smith is sharing a positive memory with his mother Grace, six months after she died at 79.
The filmmaker and actor shared a video of his mother to Instagram on Monday, June 1, that he wrote in a caption he filmed in March 2025 when he took his mother to a Dave and Buster's restaurant and arcade for some amusement. The video Smith, 55, shared showed his mother playing a racing game at the arcade, in which she placed 40th out of a potential 40 places. "Don't forget to use that break from time to time, and don't take your eyes off the road, Grace!" Smith can be heard saying in the video, while he and his mother laugh as she drives and mutters, "Get out of my way!"
"This is why they took your license away," Smith quips in the video.
"My Mom died 6 months ago today. Rather than curse the darkness, I'm gonna light a candle: In March of 2025, I took Mom to @daveandbusters to play some games," he wrote in a caption to his post. "I'm so happy we went that day, because 9 months later, she was gone. So just a reminder: go do some fun shit with the older folks in your life who were the architects of your happy memories when you were a kid. Miss you, Mom.❤️"
Smith announced Grace's death on Dec. 1, 2025 in an Instagram post he shared the following day. Grace died just two days after the Clerks filmmaker noted in a separate post on the social media platform that his mother "was suddenly on death's doorstep" but had recovered from a medical episode and was in the hospital.

"The bill for 55 years of unconditional love came due on December 1st, and the costly price was having to watch the strongest person I've ever known - my absolute favorite person in the world - exit the stage after a lifetime of setting it for her children. My Mom is gone," Smith wrote in a touching tribute at that time. He also shared a collection of family photos featuring his mother throughout her life.

In that post, Smith wrote in jest that he was "the star of the show" within his family, which includes Grace, his father Don (who died at 67 in 2003), older brother Donald and older sister Virginia. "But the real star was always Amazing Grace - Momily, The Mother of All Mothers. She was a lioness, fiercely protective of her pride, who lived for her kids - so there's never been a day in my life when I didn't know in my bones that I was valued as human being, cherished as a child, and deeply loved beyond reason," he wrote at the time. "My Mom made me feel like I mattered - to our family, to the world, and especially to her."
Smith previously shouted out his mother in a Mother's Day post he shared on May 10, as he also wrote a tribute to his wife Jennifer Schwalbach and his mother-in-law Gail. "Without these three wonderful women and massive mothers in my life, I wouldn't have amounted to even a shadow of a man, let alone somebody's parent," he wrote at the time. "I offer you ladies all of my gratitude and lots of love!"
