Demi Lovato discussed newlywed life with husband Jordan "Jutes" Lutes during her March 30 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show

The singer-songwriter also explained how a made-up character named Luigi helps their marriage

Lovato added that because this is her "forever relationship," she wants to treat it with "as much grace and compassion as possible"

One key to Demi Lovato and Jordan "Jutes" Lutes' marriage is a made-up character.

During her appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show on Monday, March 30, Lovato, who tied the knot last May, talked about married life with host Drew Barrymore. During the conversation, the singer-songwriter, 33, also explained the creative way that she and her husband handle getting their chores done without conflict.

"[Married life] is so much fun. You know, we just laugh and laugh and laugh together," Lovato said. "We have such a great connection, and I joke that we could watch paint dry and still be entertained with one another."

One way that Lovato and Lutes keep things positive between them is by blaming a fictional character instead of each other when something doesn't get done.

"We have this fictional character named Luigi," Lovato explained. "If Luigi didn't take out the trash, I gently nudge my husband and say, 'Babe, Luigi didn't take out the trash. What are we gonna do about that?' And he was like, 'Oh, you know what? Darn, Luigi! Let me get on that.' "

The One Plate at a Time: Recipes for Finding Freedom with Food cookbook author continued, "It's just, like, a gentle approach to say, 'Babe, can you do the dishes?' or 'Can you do something?' It takes the blame out of coming to someone with blame or an attack."

Lovato got the idea to fictionalize and third-party someone for her relationship from an Instagram post, but said that "learning how to communicate with one another" came "naturally."

"I've had the toxic stuff in the past that I don't want or need anymore. This is my forever relationship, and I want to treat that with as much grace and compassion as possible."

Exclusively speaking to PEOPLE in February ahead of her first wedding anniversary, Lovato shared that she loves her musician husband "more and more" every day.

"I genuinely thought on my wedding day, 'I can't love this man any more than I already do.' And then a few weeks, months go by, and I'm like, 'Oh, my God, I thought that I was maxed out on love and now I'm maxed out on love,' " she said. "And it's just like every day, I just love him more and more. And I didn't know that was possible."

The Camp Rock star added of married life: "Oh, I love it. It's so much fun. I just have the best time with him. We will stay up so late just laughing until we're crying, and I think that's the best part about being married to your best friend. It's just like a giant sleepover every night."
