DA Says Nick Reiner Won’t Face Death Penalty if Convicted of Parents’ Killings: Here’s Why

Nick Reiner will not face the death penalty if convicted of the killings of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced this week

The 33-year-old will appear in court on Tuesday, Sept. 15 for a pre-trial hearing

The announcement was made by Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman at a press conference before the hearing

Nick Reiner will not face the death penalty if convicted of the killings of his parents, Hollywood director Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said at a press conference on Tuesday, Sept. 15, that in taking the death penalty off the table, he was respecting the wishes of the victims’ children, who are Nick Reiner’s siblings and whom Hochman consulted before making his decision.

Nick, 33, was indicted by a grand jury on murder charges, as well as a special circumstance of lying in wait, in addition to the use of a knife. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges and is being represented by a public defender.

The charges are related to the stabbing deaths of Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, who were found unresponsive in their Brentwood home in the early morning hours of Dec. 14, 2025.

He was arrested hours later near the campus of the University of Southern California and has been held without bail since.

“This was a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing,” Hochman said in a previous statement.

If convicted as charged, Reiner now faces life in prison.
