President Donald Trump misgendered a heckler at a North Carolina rally on Wednesday, appearing to lose his cool as he yelled, "Go home to momma."

Trump is campaigning in the state to rebuild support for Republican Senate candidate Michael Whatley. This is Trump's first major campaign stop since the Republican Party's midterm convention. Whatley previously chaired the Republican National Committee. The protester interrupted Trump's event and was met with a flurry of boos from his supporters. The president seemed especially annoyed, snapping, "Where is he? Who is he? Show him to me." The heckler was actually a woman.

"Oh, it's a she," Trump said. "Hello, she's going home to momma. Her mother is watching right now on television, furious with their daughter."

Trump remains a powerful force with the Republican base, but Whatley will need to win over the state's large population of swing and unaffiliated voters. During the convention in Dallas last week and again tonight, Trump told voters to "pretend that I'm on the ballot," even though he is not seeking election.

The president has promised to make several campaign stops in battleground states and districts ahead of the Nov. 3 elections. A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted over the past week found Trump's approval rating at 35%, up from a record low of 33% in the previous poll.

Democrats led Republicans 44% to 37% on the generic congressional ballot, the widest Democratic advantage in the series since Trump's return to the White House in January 2025.

The North Carolina Senate race opened after Republican Sen. Thom Tillis decided not to seek reelection amid a feud with Trump that doomed his chances within the party. Former Democratic Governor Roy Cooper led Whatley 49% to 38% among likely voters in a recent Elon University poll.

Meanwhile, 54% of North Carolina voters in the survey disapproved of Trump's job performance and 31% approved.
