Buckingham Palace Responds to Shocking Allegations About King Charles in Princess Diana’s Brother’s Memoir

Following the bombshell allegation in Charles Spencer’s forthcoming memoir Swan Song: Diana, My Sister that then-Prince Charles said “we’ll forget [Princess Diana] soon enough” just days after her death, Buckingham Palace made the surprising decision to go on the record.

“While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss,” a Palace spokesperson said in a statement, casting doubt onto Spencer’s recollections of the fight.

In the passage, published in the Daily Mail, Spencer writes about arguing with the then-Prince of Wales over whether or not Princes William and Harry should walk in their mother’s funeral procession. “Prince Charles continued his stream of anger, without me interrupting. Then he stopped,” Spencer reportedly writes in Swan Song. ‘I assumed the pause signalled an effort to bring himself under control, but then he unleashed down the phone what I have always taken to be his pent-up contempt for Diana, and his horror that the world was so bowled over by her death. ‘Rest assured,’ he hissed, ‘we’ll forget her soon enough!’”

Spencer has yet to respond to the Palace’s statement. Prince William and Prince Harry have also not commented on their father’s alleged remarks.

Swan Song: Diana, My Sisteris set to be released next week, September 22, but the Daily Mail will serialize portions of the book beginning tomorrow. The Mail notes that Swan Song “includes a string of further extraordinary claims about Diana’s failed marriage to King Charles and the tumultuous aftermath of her tragic death in a car crash in Paris in 1997.”
