Billy Gunn recently addressed one of WWE’s most controversial storylines. The WWE Hall of Famer defended the infamous Nation of Domination parody, explaining why D-Generation X agreed to perform the segment.
Gunn was involved in WWE’s infamous Nation of Domination parody. The Attitude Era segment still sparks debates among wrestling fans today. Many online fans have criticized it as racist over years.
Billy Gunn explains controversial Nation of Domination WWE storyline
Speaking with Denise Salcedo, Gunn was asked if there were any storylines that made him think, ‘Oh my God?’ He replied, “No, I don’t know. I don’t think so. I mean, the one that kind of most, I guess, the one that we’ve been talking about here lately, because for some reason it seems to be a thing, is when we dressed up as the Nation, you know.”
Gunn admitted the segment has become the biggest controversy surrounding his career. However, he believes many people judge it without understanding the context behind it. He said, “So, that seems to be the big controversial thing that nobody understands, that I’m so tired of hearing about. But it wasn’t outlandish. Like now, people you couldn’t do it. Like now, not a chance in hell could you ever get away with it. But back then, it was a different time, and we were asked to do it.”

According to Gunn, the wrestlers being portrayed never objected to the idea. He said members of the Nation of Domination even helped DX prepare for the segment before it aired. “And nobody that we imitated had a problem with it because everybody that we imitated had a hand in helping us dress up like them.”
“So, people have to understand that it was a different time. If, at any time, any one of them would have had a problem with it, we wouldn’t have done it. But nobody did because it was just all done in fun and with a sense of humor. But nowadays, no.”
