Barack and Michelle Obama will reunite Sister Act stars Whoopi Goldberg and Jenifer Lewis for a new movie.
The stars will appear in a new Netflix comedy opposite Vivica A. Fox and Vanessa Williams.
Goldberg and Lewis have long spoken about another Sister Act movie, which has been stuck in development hell for years.
Oh, happy day! Sister Act stars Whoopi Goldberg and Jenifer Lewis will reunite for their first movie together in nearly 30 years — and it’s being produced by Barack and Michelle Obama.
Netflix announced Monday that the Hollywood icons will team up with Vivica A. Fox and Vanessa Williams for an ensemble feature-length comedy titled Women Like Us.
The project will mark longtime friends Goldberg and Lewis’ first movie together since 1999’s Jackie’s Back, which followed their past work on Sister Act and Corrina, Corrina. Lewis has appeared on The View — which Goldberg has moderated since 2007 — as a guest several times over the years, including during a 2022 episode during which the star asked Lewis to join her in the long-gestating Sister Act 3.

Directed by actress and Bel-Air helmer Tasha Smith (who previously directed Goldberg in the Harlem TV series), Women Like Us follows a recently widowed woman who is “dragged to the Hamptons by her lifelong best friends and sister” on what would’ve marked her 30th anniversary with her late husband, per the synopsis.
The group experiences a reckoning with grief, marriage, and sisterhood, and they come to a “realization that dreams don’t have an expiration date.”
Women Like Us is expected to begin production this fall in New York City, where Goldberg hosts live episodes of The View daily from Monday through Thursday each week. It is unclear yet whether or not the film will impact her time at the Hot Topics table, as she’s taken time off in the past to film other endeavors — including Amazon’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Anansi Boys, which has yet to be released after the writer was accused of sexual assault (“I have never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity,” Gaimain said in a subsequent statement.)
Goldberg has long shown appreciation for her time working on both Sister Act movies and Lewis in particular.

The EGOT winner even hosted a Sister Act reunion on The View in 2024, which saw her perform songs with the cast in an epic moment on the daytime talk show that moved the 70-year-old icon to tears in the moment.
While Lewis wasn’t present for the reunion, the Black-ish star, Erica Campbell, Alanna Ubach, and Jennifer Love Hewitt all submitted video messages that played throughout the episode in their absence.

Following the success of the first film in 1992, which grossed $232 million, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit earned an$125 million in global ticket sales.

Goldberg reprised her role as Sister Mary Clarence — who previously entered witness protection as a nun — in the sequel, returning to help a school choir step into their talents in a high-stakes singing competition.
A release date for Women Like Us has yet to be announced.
