Anthony Mackie reveals delightful Ian McKellen interaction ahead of 'Avengers: Doomsday'

The filming of the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movie Avengers: Doomsday brought together groups that have yet to share the screen. We have Multiverse Saga characters like Shang-Chi that are meeting the rest of the group for the first time, or the cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps making their way into our heroes' universe.

There's also a whole cast of characters from the X-Men movies from the early 2000s that have been thrown into the mix. Ian McKellen played Magneto in five movies so far -- including an uncredited cameo in The Wolverine -- and is reprising his role once again. Anthony Mackie, who took over the mantle of Captain America in 2025's Brave New World, described his first time meeting the legendary McKellen on the set of Doomsday.

But McKellen wasn't super familiar with Mackie's role in the bigger MCU. “He goes, ‘So what are you doing in the film?’ and I’m like, ‘I’m Captain America,’” Mackie said in a Comic-Con interview. “And he goes, ‘Wonderful… and you deserve that’”

When is the Avengers: Doomsday release date?

Avengers: Doomsday releases on December 18, 2026.
