Alan Ritchson has a streaming hit on his hands and a theatrical problem on his ledger. His new action-comedy, co-starring Owen Wilson, wrapped its opening weekend with a soft $6.4 million domestically. The Angel Studios release played in 2,568 theaters and drew an estimated $2.5 million on day one before fading across the weekend.

The Runner box office result lands well below what a film carrying a reported $35 million to $45 million budget needs to justify its existence. International markets have yet to report any grosses, leaving the worldwide tally at the same $6,432,956 domestic number. Angel Studios has historically leaned on word of mouth to stretch its releases, but Runner faces a steep climb from here (via Box Office Mojo).

Critics and audiences have responded more warmly to Ritchson than the numbers suggest. The film casts him as Hank Malone, a former soldier turned courier in Brisbane who must deliver a donor liver to a dying girl with a rare blood type. Rodrigo Santoro plays a cartel boss who wants the organ for his own dying superior, and Wilson tags along as Ben Bishop, the only man who can open the cooler. Scott Waugh directed from a Miles Hubley and Tommy White script that landed on the 2023 Black List.

Runner is Ritchson’s second consecutive theatrical miss. Motor City released earlier this summer and collapsed with a $1.69 million debut. That 1970s Detroit revenge thriller finished its run with $2,713,586 domestically and $336,574 overseas, a worldwide total of $3,050,160, per Box Office Mojo. Two flops in one year tell about the gap between Ritchson’s streaming fame and his box office pull.

Reacher turned him into a major presence on Prime Video, and Season 4 wrapped this Tuesday as the spin-off Neagley release nears. His film career, however, keeps landing in a middle ground.
